Challenge Brief

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza!

Ever looked at a pizza menu and wondered what the pizza chain is really charging you?  Customers these days go online and find the best deal and just order without paying any attention to the cost per topping or if they are being charged more for a topping based on the size of the pizza.  It seems like pizza chains could very easily be over charging us for our extra toppings!  Have you ever looked at different pizza chains and compared their pricing?  Driving Question:  How can you compare Domino's Pizza pricing to another pizza chain and persuade the company to use a more effective and fair pricing system?

Use the following criteria to help write a persuasive letter to Domino’s Pizza headquarters convincing them that they should change their pricing system to a better one you have created.

  • 8.4 (B) Write and graph a pricing equation that shows a proportional relationship, and describe the relationship between unit rate and slope.

  • 8.4 (C) Use data from a table or graph to determine the rate of change or slope (price per topping) and y-intercept (base pizza price) in mathematical and real world problems.

  • 8.5 (A) Illustrate linear proportional situations with tables, graphs, and equations in the form of y=kx that compare two possible pricing systems

  • 8.5 (B) Illustrate linear non-proportional situations with tables, graphs, and equations in the form of y=mx+b where b doesn't =0 that demonstrate the pizza chains pricing system and your new pricing system

  • 8.5 (F) Compare and Contrast proportional and non-proportional situations of the two pizza chains using tables, graphs, and equations in the form of y=kx or y=mx+b where b doesn't =0

  • 8.5 (I) Write an equation in the form y=mx+b from words, numbers, tables, and graphs to identify a linear relationship between two pizza toppings and size.

In addition to the above criteria, you will also be expected to:

  • Demonstrate that you can embrace new and difficult tasks as learning opportunities.

  • Apply resourcefulness and persistence in learning situations.

  • Demonstrate professionalism in all communications.

This project will be due tentatively November 7th.
